Outreach

Juntos Academy

The Juntos Program is a well-established Latino outreach program in North Carolina that supports Latino students to finish high school and pursue college degrees.  Our research group collaborate with them to expose students to topics related to geotechnical earthquake engineering. In summer 2018, we worked with rising 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders, and our seminars’ topic was ” Shaking Interdisciplinarity: Earthquakes as an evoling challenge for science, engineering and technology”

We are Women in Engineering

The We are WE Workshop at NC State invites women who are interested in pursuing graduate education in civil engineering to visit North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC, and attend a 2-day event, where students present their own research in a poster symposium and participate in discussions relevant to careers in research. As part of the program, visiting students meet with professors and NC State students and attend research seminars that align with their interests within civil engineering.  Our team has been involved in these efforts since 2016, and we look forward to strengthening the program in the years to come!

This year, the We are Women in Engineering (We are WE) Workshop will take place on February 28-March 1, 2019. The link for applications is at https://goo.gl/forms/QYt1iUP30jStbv9g2.  Additional information is provided at https://emilyzechmanberglund.wordpress.ncsu.edu/we/.

North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics Summer Experience

North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) aims to educate talented students to become leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Our research group was excited to contribute to their mission by interacting with a group of students from NCSSM during their Summer Experience at NC State. We discussed the effects of local soil conditions on ground shaking ,and they also learned recent research findings from members of the team.North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) aims to educate talented students to become leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.  Future Ingenieros at NC State

I serve as one of the mentors in the Future Ingenieros Program at NC State. As part of this program, Latino high-school students from Wake County and the North Carolina Triangle region are invited to campus for 2-6 weeks during the summer. The goal is to encourage Latino rising sophomores and seniors to attend college and consider engineering. Participants will work in a research group during their visit to campus, interact with undergraduate and graduate students, and be mentored by a professor with a Hispanic background.
